I have been looking at generations lately. It is something companies and volunteer mangers like to look at because apparently what we experience growing up (like our core values around family, education, religion, peers and media) are programmed into us before we reach high school. And although we grow and mature in many different ways those values pretty much stay intact…thus forming a generation of people all having similar characteristics, and all very different from the generation before.
Generation Y is the hot topic as of late. I have found articles on how to work with us young people graduating college and entering the workforce in large numbers everywhere from my in-flight magazine to Oprah. We are unique, you know, and our set of values is totally throwing everyone for a loop!
- We want jobs and opportunities that matter and have meaning. Over half of us when surveyed said we would take on lower pay or a lesser role if it contributes to something ‘more meaningful.’
- We want to feel like we are contributing, and this takes communication such as feedback, recognition and affirmation that the work we are doing is accomplishing something.
- We are innovators. We grew up on technology, and adapt easily to the new gadget or tool out there. Growing up, we were used to teaching generations before us how to use technology as well.
- We want to be heard and want our ideas to be listened to. If you respect us, then we will respect you.
It’s good to know about and be aware of this generation, whether you are a part of it or just trying to figure us out. As employees or volunteers, this pretty much goes across the board, and we want to express who we are through the work we do. So be on the lookout for us and if you want to know more about our Generation…Google it.
