Literacy Volunteer Portland Offers Tutor Training

The winter 2006 tutor-training schedule for Literacy Volunteers Portland is as follows:

Basic Reading Thur, Jan 26 Tues, Jan 31

Thur, Feb 2

All Basic Reading classes will take place from 5:30 ? 8:30 pm at Deering High School on Stevens Avenue, Room 111.

This 18-hour workshop will introduce you to the needs and challenges of the low-literate English speaking adult; while also giving you many tools and techniques you?ll need to help support adult learners in achieving important life goals.

There is a $30 non-refundable fee to cover the cost of materials for the Basic Reading workshop.

UMaine Center on Aging Announces Online Continuing Professional Education Series

The Center on Aging, University of Maine (Orono) announces the launch of its Internet Continuing Professional Education Program. Free. CE credits available ($5 processing fee for the CE Certificate of Attendance). Register online, www.umaine.edu/mainecenteronaging.

MARCH 13, 14, 15 - USING RESEARCH IN RURAL AGING: EVIDENCE BASED SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE - an overview of practical evaluation and research methods relevant to community organizations involved in delivery of direct services to older adults.

APRIL 3, 4, 5 - RURAL AGING: SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE MODELS AND INTERVENTION SKILLS - Through a series of interactive exercises and discussion, participants share and strategize on professional ways to deal with challenges to personal values. Participants create a plan for working through dilemmas, utilizing professional ethics for guidance in roles of care providers.
