A Request from the Maine VOAD President

Published May 17, 2006

Dear Community Members:

I just returned from a trip to New Orleans with Brent Trueworthy of National Disaster Relief, one of our VOAD members. The trip went well, however, in many places there still is a great need. Although it is 6 months after Hurricane Katrina hit many places still look like the storm hit yesterday with downed trees, electric lines and debris all over. We met with Dr. Brown of New Orleans and toured both of the charter schools that LSU is responsible for. The Capdau-Uno Elementary Charter School is operating and the Medard H. Nelson Elementary School is not operating. Both of the schools have many needs. One of our Maine elementary schools in Hallowell is donating 300 used desks and chairs to this elementary school in New Orleans. At the present we are estimating that this donation will only fill about ? of the trailer. In our conversation with Dr. Brown she made us aware of other needs that they have from library books, reference books, sports equipment to general supplies. I have attached a list of their needs and a description of the one operating school.

I am hoping that members of the State of Maine will be interested in helping obtain more supplies to fill the truck. The goods would be gathered over the next several months. The delivery of the supplies to New Orleans will occur near the end of August. Please let me know if you are interested in this project and how you would like to participate. If you have any questions or need more information please contact me at or 948-3499 work.
