Jean M. Twenge
Associate Professor of Psychology

Dr. Twenge is the keynote speaker and presenter of two workshops. She is the author of more than 60 scientific publications and the book Generation Me: Why Today’s Young Americans Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled — and More Miserable Than Ever Before (Free Press, 2006). She frequently gives talks and seminars on teaching and working with today’s young generation based on a dataset of 2 million young people. Her audiences have included college faculty, high school teachers, military personnel, camp directors, and corporate executives. She holds a BA and MA from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

Mr. Cowling, CEO of People First –Total Solutions possesses over 20 years of management experience with organizations including UNICEF, AFS Intercultural Programs, The Smith Family, and Victorian Relief. He has been CEO of People First –Total Solutions since October 2003. He believes that people are the key to an organization's success or often the very reason for failure and he is passionate about ensuring organizations and their staff (both paid and unpaid) have mutually beneficial relationships. Mr. Cowling provides public speaking, consultation and training services for a wide range of public and private organizations in the United States, New Zealand and Australia as well as individual coaching.
Edward Anderson, Jr.
Bioterrorism & Emergency Preparedness Coordinator

Mr. Anderson is responsible for a wide range of operational issues including developing policies and procedures for emergency responses to Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) events, and provides necessary logistical support to the City, Los Angeles County and Regional Emergency operation Centers. He earned a B.A. in Microbiology at California State University and holds a M.A. degree in Philosophy & Religion from Loma Linda University. Mr. Anderson holds a Project Management Certification from Villanova University, an MBA degree from University of West Florida/Regis University and is completing his J.D. Degree in Law from Southwestern University School of Law.
Janet May

Ms. May works for the Center for Community Inclusion & Disability Studies at the University of Maine. Her interests include community building and how to creating activities that are accessible to all. She is interested in the concepts presented in Catherine Hyde's novel Pay it Forward and how we can have "pay it forward" moments in daily life. Prior to coming to CCI, she worked as a regional transition coordinator for nine years in Maine's transition network. She has a BS in Physical Education and a Masters of Education in the area of Special Education from the University of Maine.
Kim Laramy

Ms. Laramy has been in marketing and communication since 1980, when she was a radio talk show host. Her early experience includes dozens of years working as a public relations practitioner and communications specialist, mostly in the non profit arena; including as a hospital marketing director and as a communications and marketing director for the United Way of Greater Portland. She is currently a member and trainer of the Social Marketing National Excellence Collaborative and conducts social marketing trainings nationwide. She has lectured and trained extensively around Maine on public relations, marketing, social marketing, branding, positioning and communications.
Vicki Schmidt
Maine Fire Protection Services Commisson
Vicki is a State Fire Instructor II with Maine Fire Training & Education as well as a Volunteer Firefighter and Training Officer for the Buckfield Fire Dept in Buckfield Maine. She serves on the Governor's Fire Protection Services Commission as a representative for the Maine State Federation of Firefighters and also serves on the Advisory Council for Maine Fire Training & Education in conjunction with Southern Maine Community College. In addition Vicki is Training Program Coordinator for the Western Maine Fire Attack School and the Frandford Mutual Aid Fire Training Association. Vicki’s non volunteer work includes a full time position with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection as a Geographical Information Systems Environmental Specialist.

Neil is a facilitator, mentor, business advisor with over 30 years' experience. He has worked on a broad range of endeavors for a variety of organizational structures from entrepreneurs to the U.S. Department of Defense to non-profit to community. His business experience stems from a diverse employment and consulting history that exposed him to almost every working function within an organization. He serves on the board of Maine Youth Leadership and assists producing its seminars. Neil works extensively with teenagers on the tools and thinking of leadership, volunteerism and character.
John Patterson

Mr. Patterson has been with the Center for over a decade, but even before joining the Center staff, he had a long career with nonprofit organizations and government agencies. He has been the executive director of a community-based nonprofit serving people with developmental disabilities, school teacher, staff member of a nationally affiliated youth-serving organization, director of volunteers for a juvenile offender program, project director for a juvenile justice research project, and director of planning for a state criminal justice agency. In addition, he has been a consultant in juvenile justice and youth protection for many federal and state agencies as well as a broad spectrum of nonprofit organizations. He has a BS Ed. from the University of New Mexico.

Lori Tsuruda
People Making a Difference

Ms. Tsuruda is the founder and executive director of People Making a Difference (PMD). She recruits and manages one-time individual and corporate volunteers for local charities. She also assists charities and companies in improving their volunteer/community involvement programs, relying on a foundation of knowledge gained from feedback from PMD's stakeholders. She has been a volunteer manager for 20+ years, and is serving her third term as president of the Directors of Volunteer Administration (DOVA) professional association in Boston. Ms. Tsuruda has earned bachelor's and master's degrees from MIT and Tufts University, respectively.
Megan Latimer

Megan Latimer joined HandsOn Network in January, 2002, and has served various capacities ranging from fundraising and marketing to new affiliate support in her tenure. Prior to joining HandsOn, Megan worked in fundraising for a nonprofit serving people with disabilities in Vietnam, supported marketing at an internet startup, and served two years at the Atlanta Paralympic Organizing Committee supporting an assistive technology export promotion initiative. Megan received her BS in International Affairs from Georgia Tech.
Dr. Gretchen Van der Veer

Dr. Gretchen Van der Veer is the Director of Leadership Development and Training for the Corporation for National Service responsible for managing leadership development and training programs that support thousands of nonprofit volunteer organizations funded by the agency. Prior to her work with national and community service, Dr. Van der Veer spent 15 years in higher education at the Universities of Vermont, South Carolina and Maryland. She received a PhD from the University of Maryland in Education Policy, Planning and Administration with a focus on higher education leadership and has been an affiliate faculty member in the Graduate School of Management.
